5 Ideas for Inspiring Outdoor Play

As the temperature is beginning to increase, it’s the perfect time to put down the technology screens and encourage outdoor play. Outdoor play is vital for children as it prompts physical, emotional, intellectual and social development. Here are some fun activities and ideas to inspire you:

Sticky Plastic Frames

This idea requires only cardboard and sticky-back plastic! Create the perfect sticky frame to allow children to explore outside and showcase their findings. This task can be carried out independently or in groups. It’s also an activity which educates Children on the many species of plants and flowers in the outdoors around us.

Mud Kitchen

Mud kitchens are an interactive and popular way of allowing children to experiment with textures. They encourage communication with other children, as well as a level of emotional understanding. If you don’t have access to a mud kitchen at home a tuff tray works just as well. This idea can be as simple or as intricate as you would like, so get outside and get messy!

If you’d rather opt for a more edible option, why not try out a chocolate powder ‘mud’ kitchen like the one above.

Hopscotch

This traditional game is not only easy to set up, but it also contributes towards child development in many ways. By following set rules children will work on their cognitive development, whilst practicing their mathematical skills. Their gross motor skills will also be improved through focusing on balance and strength. Lastly, by playing with others and being mindful of those around them, they will develop their social skills.

Magic Potions

Potion making is a fun activity which children can take part in using any ingredients you have available outside. Not only does this task help to fuel their imaginations, it also develops their social skills through creating potions together and sharing ideas. To make this activity even more beneficial, encourage children to work on their mathematic skills through counting ingredients and measuring.

Coat Hanger Scales

This simple activity can be created by using equipment which will already be at hand around the house. All you will need is a coat hanger, string and plastic/paper cups or bowls. This idea will help to educate children on the idea of weights and calculating equivalencies.
