10 Engaging Ways to Celebrate World Earth Day!

World Earth Day is the ideal opportunity to engage children in learning about the environment and fostering a sense of responsibility towards our planet. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or caregiver, there are plenty of enjoyable activities that can help kids connect with nature and understand the importance of conservation. Keep reading to discover 10 fun and educational activities to try out this World Earth Day...

1. Nature Scavenger Hunt: Kick off your World Earth Day celebration with a nature scavenger hunt! Create a list of items commonly found in nature such as leaves, rocks, flowers, and more. Take the children on a journey through a local park or woodland area, encouraging them to observe their surroundings and discuss why each item is important for the Earth.

Our Treasure Tubes are the perfect resource for this activity!

2. Planting Seeds: Teach children about the significance of plants in our ecosystem by getting them to plant seeds in small pots. Use this activity as an opportunity to discuss concepts like photosynthesis, the water cycle, and the role of plants in providing oxygen. Watching their seeds grow can be an exciting and rewarding experience for kids.

3. Recycling Crafts: Get creative with recyclable materials! Collect items like cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, and egg cartons, and let the children use them to create artwork or crafts. This not only teaches them about the importance of recycling but also encourages imagination and resourcefulness. With recyclable packaging and made up of 97% natural ingredients, our Pritt glue sticks are the perfect adhesive for this activity!

4. Storytime with Environmental Themes: Gather the children for a special storytime featuring books with environmental themes. Classics like "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss or "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein can spark meaningful discussions about conservation and empathy towards nature. After reading, encourage the children to reflect on the lessons learned and how they can apply them to their own lives.

5. Earth Day Pledges: Encourage children to make pledges to help the Earth. Whether it's reducing water usage, recycling more, or picking up litter, invite them to commit to simple actions that make a positive impact on the environment. Create a visual display of their pledges to serve as a reminder throughout the year.

6. Environmental Games: Why not order our brilliant Recycling Game to try out with your class? Practise sorting the picture cards into glass, metals, paper & cardboard, plastics and non-recyclables. An ideal resource to discuss and educate children on recycling and its importance.

7. Outdoor Clean-up: Organise a clean-up activity in the school playground or a nearby park. Provide gloves and bags for the children to collect litter while discussing the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy. This hands-on experience allows them to develop a sense of responsibility and ownership.

8. Nature Art: Take the children on a nature walk and encourage them to collect natural materials such as leaves, flowers, and sticks. Then, use these materials to create art pieces like leaf rubbings, flower collages, or nature sculptures. This activity not only fosters creativity but also deepens their connection to the natural world.

9. Upcycling Workshop: Introduce children to the concept of upcycling by demonstrating how to turn old or unused items into something new and useful. From bird feeders made from plastic bottles to pencil holders crafted from tin cans, inspire creativity while promoting sustainable practices.

10. Tuff tray: Create a sensory tuff tray to allow children to explore the many different textures and natural materials found in the world around us. We used our Bright Coloured Sand Shakers and Rainbow Snow  as an environmentally friendly base for our tray, allowing for different textured and colours for each climate. This activity also provides a great opportunity for discussing the many different habitats and animals found in each. We used our Jumbo Zoo Animals and Jumbo Ocean Animals to represent this.

Celebrating World Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to inspire curiosity, foster empathy, and instill a sense of responsibility towards the planet. By engaging in these fun and educational activities, children can develop a deeper appreciation for the Earth and become stewards of its future.
