The History behind Pritt and why the Eco is important

For more than 50 years, the Pritt glue stick has made crafting easier in homes, schools and offices around the world. Since being invented in 1969, Pritt has adapted to support crafting in 121 countries: whether this be through Pritt’s roller range, creative coloured sticks or the iconic glue sticks.

To mark the launch of our new 97% natural formula, we will be uncovering Pritt’s past and present to help you discover how Pritt has evolved into a worldwide and sustainable brand.

Pritt’s History

The world’s first glue stick was invented by Henkel in 1969 after being inspired by the ‘twist-up ease’ of lipstick applicators. The convenience of this tubed glue resulted in the Pritt stick becoming available in 38 countries by 1971 – only two years after creation.

After being created in the 1960s, Pritt was first launched as a small-sized stick. Having gained widespread popularity amongst schools, a medium, large and even jumbo stick was launched to help fuel children’s creativity.

Following an abundance of success in the early 2000s, Pritt’s focus shifted towards sustainable crafting. The move towards sustainability initially began in 2000 as PVP in Pritt stick was completely replaced. This change was followed by Pritt’s transition to a 90% natural ingredients formula in 2011, which was not only safer for children to use but also even smoother and cleaner than before.

Pritt in the Present

At Pritt, we strive to bring schools, offices and homes around the world the best crafting solutions possible. Having worked tirelessly to develop our 90% natural formula, we are proud to launch Pritt’s 97% natural formula.

Made predominantly from potato starch, sugar and water, this 97% natural formula allows children and crafters to get creative in a way that is both safe and sustainable. This is seen not only through the adhesive formula but also through the glue stick itself.

The 43g Pritt Stick is made from 65% recycled plastic, whilst the 11g and 22g sticks contain 40% recycled plastic. In fact, the glue stick, including its cap, is 100% recyclable.

With this new formula, the team at Pritt have found that a focus on sustainability in no way means a compromise on quality. As such, Pritt sticks air-tight packaging ensures that glue does not dry out – allowing consumers to keep the same stick for longer!
