Making the Most of Maths a Conference to Empower Childminders

On Saturday, October 19th, KCS is excited to host an insightful conference in collaboration with Childminding UK, tailored specifically for childminders and early years educators. This event aims to boost confidence in teaching early years maths through engaging, practical activities that show how maths integrates into everyday life far beyond simple numbers and counting.

As Stephen Morgan, the newly appointed Early Education Minister, has emphasised, "A good early grounding in skills like communication and maths ensures children arrive at school ready to learn." This conference will provide you with strategies to help the children in your care develop these crucial skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for school.

Expert Speakers

Childminding UK Patron Neil Griffiths will explore the role of picture books, stories, and rhymes in enhancing early maths learning, demonstrating how they contribute to the wider mathematical curriculum.

Dr. Sue Allingham’s talk, "Maths is more than 1, 2, 3," will delve into how maths is woven into everyday life and learning. She explains, "Maths is all around us in our settings and daily lives. We will explore how even the youngest children use mathematical skills to solve problems and investigate the world."

Interactive Workshops

Engage in hands-on workshops designed to inspire creativity and enhance your teaching approach:

Dr. Allingham will lead a workshop titled "Which Way is Up?" focused on the intersection of maths and physical development.
Ben Kingston-Hughes will present "Fireworks in the Brain – Unleashing Creativity and Mathematical Exploration" in the context of Expressive Arts and Design.
Ellie Collar will offer insight into supporting children with SEND through her workshop "Making Play Count."
Anita Baxter and Jenny Welling, Childminding UK Trustees, will guide you through the wonders of "Exploring Maths – the Forest School Way."

Networking Opportunities

Take advantage of this chance to connect with fellow childminders and the Childminding UK staff. Share ideas, collaborate, and forge lasting professional relationships that can support your practice in the future.

Exhibitors

The conference will also feature a number of childcare focused organisations who can offer useful and innovative information, services and resources.

  • KCS Education - Showcasing tried and tested learning resources, essential materials for childminders, and a sneak peek at new products.
  • Red Robin Books - Books for children up to 12 years old, written and illustrated by great storytellers and fabulous artists, including Neil Griffiths (who will be happily signing books).
  • Morton Michel - The UK’s leading Childcare Insurance Specialist and Childminding UK's discount partner.
  • Ofsted - Wendy Ratcliffe and Sam Sleeman-Boss are looking forward to meeting you for a chat and to answer any questions or queries you have.
  • Pen Green Research Base - Offering childminders a comprehensive range of professional development opportunities including full early years degree programmes.
  • The Oliver Steeper Foundation and LifeVac - Following the tragic loss of Oliver who died in a nursery after choking on pasta, the Oliver Steeper Foundation was created mid 2023 with the aims of providing a life-saving medical device into all registered early years childcare settings.
