Autumn Activity Ideas

Seasonal Art

Leaf Rubbing Art: Collect leaves of different shapes and sizes, place them under a sheet of paper, and use crayons or colored pencils to rub over the top, creating beautiful leaf impressions.

Autumn Collages: Use fallen leaves, acorns, pinecones, and other natural items to create a textured autumn-themed collage (these make great displays when they're all joined together!).
Pumpkin Painting: Instead of carving, let children paint mini pumpkins with bright colors, patterns, or funny faces and let their imaginations run wild!

Suncatchers: Use Autumnal shades of tissue paperto create suncatchers in the shape of leaves, pumpkins or anything else you can think of - perfect for brightening up windows.

Nature Prints: Press leaves, flowers, or other nature finds into clay or air-dry dough to make textured nature prints that can be painted once dry.

Pinecone Owls: Turn pinecones into cute owls using felt, googly eyes, and small twigs for wings and feet.

Autumn Wreaths: Use paper plates as the base and decorate with cut-out leaves, twigs, and berries to create beautiful individual wreaths.

Other Activities you can do to learn about Autumn:

Nature Walks – Take a walk outside and observe the changing foliage, collecting anything you can use for learning. You might even spot local wildlife preparing for winter. Learn about different types of trees, the science behind colour changes, and animal behaviours during Autumn.

Harvest Festivals - Celebrate with a harvest festival or food tasting event featuring seasonal produce like apples, pumpkins, and squashes. This will teach students about local agriculture, the importance of seasonal eating, and cultural traditions associated with harvest time.

Science Experiments - Conduct experiments related to autumn phenomena, such as investigating how temperature affects leaf colour or creating simple models to understand the water cycle. This will encourage scientific inquiry and hands-on learning through observation and experimentation.

Maths and Measurement Activities - Use autumn objects for math activities, such as counting acorns, measuring pumpkins, or sorting leaves by size and colour.

Environmental Education - Discuss the importance of autumn for ecosystems, such as how leaf litter benefits soil and habitats. This activity will promote environmental awareness and the importance of ecological cycles.
