Batik With Flour And Water Using Spray Paints

Batik With Flour And Water Using Spray Paints

You will need -

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Measuring Jug
  • Cotton or Calico Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Piping Bag/ Squeezable Bottle
  • Fabric Sprays

Instructions -

1) Mix equal amounts of flour and water in a measuring jug to make a paste with a similar consistency to a batter mix.

2) Transfer the mix into a piping bag or squeezable bottle.

3) Cut your chosen fabric to size (at least 5cm larger than the diameter of the embroidery hoop) and iron flat.

4) Loosen the screw on the embroidery hoop and stretch fabric over the inside hoop. Tighten the screw of the outer hoop whilst holding the material firmly in place. This technique can also be done without the embroidery hoop by securing the material to a covered table top.

5) Take the piping bag or squeezable bottle and apply the mixture onto the fabric to create a pattern (an outline of a picture can be placed underneath the fabric to provide simple lines for the children to pipe over). If the mixture is not thick enough it will bleed through the fabric.

6) Leave to dry.

7) Once dry, apply the spray paint over the fabric. Using more than one colour will give a great effect.

8) Leave to dry.

9) When the paint is dry, peel of the batik mixture and this will reveal the fabric underneath.

10) Remove fabric from the embroidery ring and iron the material to fix the colour.
